This is a difficult but challenging question given the sheer quantity of characters that inhabit the ADF universe. I have many favourites but after a great deal of thought have narrowed it down to two absolute favourites.

Flinx is my favourite "extraordinary" character. He has great power and a great destiny but is humble, introspective and insightful. He is the archetypal hero, reluctantly gifted but ultimately selfless.

Ethan Frome Fortune is my favourite "ordinary" character. He is the relatively ordinary man caught up in extraordinary circumstances. He has no divine gift of strength or cunning but he does his best and finds courage within himself to stand by his morals and his friends.

When I was younger I dreamed of being Flinx but now that I'm older and possibly wiser, I hope I'm more like Ethan...

Difficult is putting it mildly. There are so many characters to choose from. Each one with their own pro's and con's. Sranul and...I can't remember the Z'hista (sp?) warrior's name, from Shadowkeep. Balthazar the minidrag, Jake Pickett, Mudge, Chaz, Captain Bibbens, Sasheem, Drom, Roseroar, Cautious, Braglob (before he went completely psycho-hostile), and the webling who briefly wanted a taste of Jon-Tom.

This is, of course, an extremely abbreviated list. It doesn't cover the fox who made Jon-Tom's clothes...or the one who offered up the wolf bitch in the dice game....or the hundreds of other characters, expressed or imagined, in all these wonderful stories.

jon tom is the guy for me he starts out vunerable and dare i say it just a little addicted to thee herb"however as each adventure takes place exceptance of his situation makes him grow into the character we all see a little of ourselves in identyfying with the character is all important, adf has acheived this on a 10 commandments scale bit long winded but you get the point.

I havent seen his name yet which is surprising but have we all forgotten Clothahump of the tree? sure he may be a little rude somtimes, but most dablers in the arcane seldom have the patience for normal citizens, especially drunks like Mudge and Sorble two other favorites.

Also never forgot Caz, Coulvier Culb(spelling??), or Pog, whom I'd like to meet as a full fledged phoenix!!!

ANd I realize there all spellsinger characters, but I dont get around to alot of sci-fi, what with Robert Jordans tree-killing wheel of time novels taking up most of my time.

The character i'd like more info on is old Conc, Concarry Clive Majestatus, love to know more details of what sent him from earth to xica.

I nearly didn't buy the book LIFE FORM because some idiot reviewed it on amazon.com as SENTENCED TO PRISM under a different name (it's not), but i really enjoyed it, it's a stand alone book unrelated to any series and well worth searching for a copy, if you can find one.

And on the same note, aren't we overdue for a book on the earlier life of Skua September? Just as the founding of the commonwealth trilogy (DIRGE) picked up on the treetrunk incident from mentions in earlier books there is an outstanding storyline of a war that Skua may have been involved in starting.

Let's face it Skua September can out drink out fight any man woman bug eyed alien or cat person in the commonwealth. Isn't that right feller me lads! ;)

I'll list them, but I want to briefly explain WHY these guys are my favourites. I'll try and keep it brief.

TOP 5 ADF ORIGINALS:

Angel - "The Mocking Program"
Because I like his world-weary, pragmatic brand of altruism

Robert - "Maori"
Because I like how he has many noble characterisitics... but is still ultimately a product of his time and does not have a modern values system that I agree with.

Etjole - "Journeys Of The Catechist"
Because I like how his first instinct is not to resort to violence, and I like the contrast between his notions of honour and that of his travelling companions.

Amos - "Mad Amos"
Because he's a magnet for weirdness and because he's so badass that it's hilairious

Mudge - The "Spellsinger" series
Because he's a boozer, a womanizer, a gambler, a mercenary, a borderline-kleptomaniac and damn proud of it too!!!!!

TOP 5 LICENSED CHARACTERS WHERE I ENJOYED ADF'S INTERPRETATION:

Will & Sylvia - "Dinotopia Lost" & "The Hand Of Dinotopia"
Because I loved the way that ADF provided insight into their relationship (something only fleetingly alluded to in Gurney's original books), but without falling into the traps that a lot of bad fanfiction does.

Starman & Jenny - "Starman"
Carpenter's movie is a guilty pleasure. I know that it's scientifically ludicrous and terribly sentimental, but it just pulls at my heartstrings... I found that ADF's descriptions of the characters' thought processes as they undertake this emotional roller coaster ride enriched my subsequent viewings of the movie.

Preacher - "Pale Rider"
Eastwood's film I think shows promise of greatness but never quite gets there. With Foster's novelisation I could overlook the technical deficiencies of the movie (namely the bad lighting and dodgy performances of the supporting cast) and fully appreciate the mythic elements of the story. I like the way that Foster presented The Preacher, enigmatic but oddly human.

Pip and Flinx, of course.

Sylzenzuzex (as a kid I actually had a crush on this insect...strange kid I suppose)

Mahnahmi and Teleen aux Rudenuaman; evil, powerful women from Orphan Star. Whatever happened to Mahnahmi, anyway?

I always liked both Skua September and his brother.

That's my quick list without consulting my library!

As to what ever happened to Mahnahmi, you need to read FLINX TRANSCENDENT....
