Michael Whelan

Tim White (recently)

Scott Fischer (recently)

Particularly Tim White's paintings in the mid to late 70s of his depiction of various scenes and vehicles in the Flinx and Pip series are awesome. To this day, I dislike abstract type art especially in sci fi genre.

It's difficult to use abstract art to illustrate SF, but you should check out the work of Richard Powers. Alone among those who attempted to use such art to illustrate SF (including Jack Gaughn), Powers was unique. His art truly conveys a sense of otherworldliness, and I remember his covers fondly. There is a fine book of his SF (and other) work edited by Jane Frank.

I like the art work a lot. Thanks for the tip.
